Depression does not have a look or appearance. Anyone can be experiencing depression, it does not discriminate. In order to meet criteria for depression, 5 of the following symptoms have to be present more days than not for two weeks: disturbance in sleep, energy, self worth, enjoyment, concentration, appetite, movement with depressed mood.
A lot of ppl ask me, “it’s only been here for x amount of time, is it really worth it to start an antidepressant?” The answer is if it’s two weeks or greater, yes! Depression is so much easier to treat early on. Imagine depression is like a wound (in a way it probably is- a lot of inflammation involved), we want to address it before it becomes a complex infection. How do we do that? By staying on top of symptoms and addressing them quickly! So if symptoms have been there for two weeks or longer, it is worth it to get treatment.
