Intractable Hiccups: A Psychiatrist's Super Power

Updated: Jan 13

I love being a psychiatrist, but our place to shine like a hero does not happen too often except when it comes to treating intractable hiccups! Your PCP (and whole medical team) will know the answer is chlorpromazine, but they haven’t prescribed it in 20 years and are

too afraid to, so this IS the psychiatrist’s best opportunity to shine like a diamond! Every time I’ve treated hiccups, my patients have been so relieved and grateful! I actually prefer haloperidol because the dosing is a little easier. It can come in pretty low doses and usually a little goes a long way. Sometimes the person needs to take the medication short term and other times, they need it long term.
