Folic Acid and Depakote

Updated: Jan 13

Most medications have risks in pregnancy, but in general the benefits of treating the mental health problem outweigh the risks of taking the medication. The one exception is Depakote or Valproic acid. Any female of childbearing age should be on birth control while taking this. Many reproductive psychiatrists recommend not using this medication in any female of child bearing age. If Depakote is the only medication that works for a woman of reproductive age, she should take 4g daily of Folic Acid to prevent neural tube defects in any unplanned pregnancies.
