One of the very few medications we avoid in reproductive psychiatry is Depakote or Valproic Acid. It is a really great mood stabilizer medication, so don’t fret if you have to take it, but make sure to be on birth control (probably a barrier contraception too) and folic acid if you are a woman of reproductive age. That said, the rate of neural tube defects in babies exposed to Depakote is really high, about 1 in 50 to 1 in 100 (1-2%).
Depakote is a treatment option for bipolar disorder, migraines and seizures.
